ISO/TS 16949:2002 is based on ISO 9001:2000 and is a globally recognized automotive sector requirements document. This standard focuses on supplier management commitment to quality system improvement and performance measurements taken over time in order to demonstrate continuous improvement with an emphasis on customer satisfaction. As a minimum, this standard provides a supplier to vehicle manufacturers a single quality management system recognized by all IATF participating companies.

ISO 9001 is part of the globally recognized family of ISO 9000 standards for quality management systems granted by the International Organization for Standardization.  This International Standard specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer requirements through continuous improvement of the management system.
